Episode 132: Nice Guys Finish FIRST, Not Last

Let’s start with a little background about my business and my first big commercial account. So, I went to do my FIRST big bid at a credit union. It was a chain with 5 branches. They had huge windows and there was so much equipment we didn’t have. We needed a scissor lift, booms, etc. I knew nothing, but I showed up anyways.

Most of the other guys were in their 50’s with their big awesome work trucks, and here I was, young, mid 20’s with a crappy truck, faking it til I made it. I had NO idea what I Was doing, standing there pretending like I was taking measurements and knew what I was doing. I kept telling myself there was no way I’d get the account, but WE GOT IT! 

Unfortunately, I underbid it quite a bit. However, I got a lot of life experience and it wound up being a HUGE ROI for us later on. My confidence level went from a .5 to a 9.5.

We got the job done and it wasn’t even that big of a deal. It felt like Mt. Everest at the time, and it wasn’t.

I’d rather you underbid something as well. At least you’d get the experience and get over that initial fear and anxiety. Don’t let anything hold you back. Not the fear of criticism, the fear of others, the fear of what might happen. Keep going, keep doing and keep asking the questions you need to ask.
